Dell XPS 13 (2019)
The 2019 version of the Dell XPS 13 is a hardware refresh of last year’s version, being updated with 8th Gen Core i3, i5 or i7 Intel Whiskey Lake processors. It is one of the most refined ultrabooks of its generation, a device that builds on the strengths of the earlier versions and a camera finally placed at the top of the screen. There is also a new color scheme and revised screen options for a matte non-touch FHD panel, touch FHD, and a touch UHD panel with HDR support.
The Whiskey Lake CPUs are mostly refined versions of the KabyLake-R generations, and able to run at higher Turbo Clock speeds if the cooling solution can keep temperatures in check. The Dell XPS 13 inherits its internal architecture and cooling particularities from the 2018 Dell XPS 13. As a result, the latest Dell XPS 13 scores 5-10% higher results in CPU benchmarks, especially when set on the new Ultra Performance power mode from the Power Manager control panel, which trades in slightly higher temperatures and louder fans for increased performance.
The new 2.25mm webcam is not only small enough to fit above the display but uses a 720p widescreen sensor paired with four far-field microphones for activating Cortana or Alexa from a distance. It has a wider frame for capturing the surroundings more easily.
The build quality and design language of the Dell XPS 13 are the same as before. The laptop is thin and light at 0.46 inches (11.6mm) and 2.7 pounds (1.23kg), respectively. It also has the same anodized aluminum screen lid and base, coupled with a woven carbon fiber (or glass fiber on light colored models) keyboard deck.
As for the keyboard itself, it is responsive as ever, and the glass-coated touchpad is a pleasure to use.
The Dell XPS 13 is available in Dell’s three colors: silver-on-black, rose gold-on-white and a brand-new frost-on-white scheme. With its finally-improved webcam and longer battery life, the 2019 Dell XPS 13 is not much different than previous models beyond these improvements. Instead, it continues the lineage of one of the best laptops of all time.
