Sonos x Ikea Symfonisk bookshelf speaker
Sonos and Ikea have teamed up to release the Symfonisk bookshelf speaker that is available from your local Ikea or from the home furnishing store’s website only.
The bookshelf speaker is a combination of Ikea's unqiue design on the outside but very much Sonos speakers inside that can seamlessly integrate with other products in the company’s lineup like the Sonos One, Beam, Play:5, Play:1, etc. It also fully integrates with Ikea’s Tradfri smart home platform and Home Smart app.
The Symfonisk is capable to to subtly take up residence on a bookshelf when attached to a wall using the optional wall-mount bracket, or wall hook. You can lay it either horizontally or vertically, whichever way you like. The rubberized feet and the audio controls make it obvious which way is right side up. However, there’s no aux input on the bookshelf speaker.
Futhermore, it is only certified to hold 6.6 pounds of weight so at most a few books and your smartphone can be placed on top of it. If you mount the speaker near your bed, Ikea also sells a placemat that will prevent your phone from vibrating off of the top.
Since the Symfonisk has no built-in microphone, you’ll need a Google Home or Amazon Echo if you want to start a playlist with just your voice. It's great that it's easy to set an alarm in the Sonos app if you want the lamp to wake you up. It also includes Apple’s AirPlay 2, so if you use an iPhone or iPad, you can play music using Siri and have even more options for music sources beyond the many services that Sonos already supports.
Sonos claims that the lamp and bookshelf speakers each have two class-D digital amplifiers, one tweeter, and one mid-woofer inside. (excerpt from theverge) Putting two of them together as a stereo pair can really open up the sound on the bookshelf speakers, though.
