Google's 2-step verification ensures that no one else can log into your gmail account. I only access my email either through my phone of laptop. Frequently changing your password is another way to properly secure your account.

I know using two party authentication tightens security, but I guess I'm just too lazy to take those extra steps. I also feel uncomfortable giving out my number.
