The increased frequency of attacks online has made the need to be secure online such a necessity. Again, reliable software don't necessarily need to be bought.

To some extent, I agree with you that these kind of software may not be as 'free' as we may want to imagine. In the long run, it is much better to pay a small fee and get reliable software.
