Even surpassing 1 billion downloads (in 2012) wasn't a mean fete but despite the huge success, it almost feels like there are better media players that have come up recently. Is VLC still enjoying the monopoly or is it just a matter of time before it is overtaken?

I don't think that VLC has the monopoly for video players. It may have a big chunk of users who use this kind of video player but that doesn't mean that it has the monopoly.

Altair, which other video players are popular? I am familiar with Media Player Classic, Kodi and ACG Player. I hardly use VLC nowadays though at some point, it was the media player of choice for most people.

DivX is a popular one in Windows system. We normally don't use that as a player, but there's codex that we use of the DivX system in order to play a video format even when we are using other video players.

Am I the only one using whatever is already on my computer? I never download anything to watch videos. I just go with the preinstalled software.

No, that's how I am as well. I just use whatever came with my laptop and tablet. I just need it for viewing purposes and it works fine for that.

I have never used whatever comes with the computer because of the assumption that the downloaded software is always superior. All the same, it doesn't hurt to have a variety. It also depends on what the computer is mostly used for.
