That half of the world's iPads are obsolete is a shocking statistic by all means! All the same, disabling app updates could be Apple's way of encouraging people to purchase the latest devices.

Won't disabling updates for obsolete devices hurt Apple in the long run? The article says those devices no longer receive an updated iOS. Won't that make them vulnerable to malware?

Elijah, these are exactly the same thoughts I had. I would still use an 'obsolete' iPad even without an updated iOS and even if the need to purchase another device came up, I would choose another alternative.

The article is right about the original iPad. Mine basically just works for reading ebooks and playing music. I have to use my newer model to surf the net and stream movies.

Apple is known for their shady practices that render older devices obsolete. Such a waste. Imagine all the resources that go into constructing these devices. I doubt most of them are recycled or repurposed. There's lots of electronic waste on... See more

That's a good point, Lachlan86. It's a shame because Apple's products are built to last and can be useful for years. I still use my original iPod Touch and it's going strong.
