From the article it looks like data hungry devices like security cameras are a no-go when it comes to using your smarthome tech while traveling. There are plenty of other options though and the article is worth a read if you have smarthome devices.

As a pet owner, I can see the benefit of being able to check-in on my dog while I'm on vacation. I hire a dog sitter, but if you already have smart devices in the house, why not use them to make doubly sure that the family pet is okay?
